Vehicle Import from UK and Northern Ireland

Bringing UK and NI Cars to Ireland

With the post-Brexit customs changes, importing vehicles from the UK to Ireland involves a necessary customs process. To ensure a smooth transition, here's what you need to know.

Customs Fees and Charges for Vehicles

  • 10% Customs Duty: Applied based on the purchase price and transport. (0% for UK-manufactured vehicles, subject to Certificate of Conformity or Oasis report)

  • 23% VAT: Calculated based on the purchase price, transport, and customs duty. VAT can be deferred for VAT-registered businesses with an EORI number.

(Note: For customs duty rates on vehicles other than cars, kindly reach out to our office.)

Required Documentation for Customs Clearance

  1. Vehicle Invoice: Include seller/buyer details, vehicle description, Chassis/vin and registration number, and value.

  2. V5 Log Book: Essential for registration details. All pages are required for submission.

  3. Ferry Ticket: Provide date, time, shipping line used, vehicle registration, and cost.

  4. Proof of Payment: A bank account statement screenshot highlighting the transaction.

  5. EORI or PPS Number: Ensure proper forms are completed.

Upon successful customs clearance, we'll generate the SAD document necessary for VRT. You'll then need to book your VRT appointment and pay the relevant VRT tax.

Important Notes for Northern Ireland Imports

  • Vehicles registered in the UK and imported to Northern Ireland before Jan 1, 2021, don't require customs declaration, customs duty, or VAT.

  • Vehicles registered in the UK and imported to Northern Ireland after Jan 1, 2021, need a customs declaration and might incur customs duty and VAT.

  • Vehicles first registered in Northern Ireland, without previous UK registration, are exempt from customs duty and VAT.

  • New vehicles* bought in Northern Ireland are VAT subject but not customs duty. (*New if within 6 months or less than 6,000 km travelled.)

Remember, all UK-to-Ireland vehicle imports necessitate customs declaration, customs duty and VAT payment.
